I recently did a project for AP English class using Google Slides. I'm rather proud of how nicely the theme turned out. You can see it below (in the blog post).
I liked the color palette for the "Spearmint" theme, so I tweaked its slide design to appear similar to the "Material Design" theme. The changes were pretty simple from a design standpoint. Just (in View>Master) make all the backgrounds dark gray, move the accent color strip up to the top as a header, and adjust the text colors accordingly. I also put a drop shadow image under the accent color strip for the layered effect. The images are animated like a lightbox you would see on a website. Here's the embedded slideshow.
